president obama and his challenger governor romney squaring off in their first presidential debate. but take a look at the real clear politics average of the latest national polls. this, this is the gap that mitt romney has to close in the next five weeks if he is to win on november 6th. topping our political headlines right now, vice president joe biden is on the campaign trail in the critical swing state of florida. as we mentioned a few moments ago. he talked about the gop ticket in ft. myers. >> what they're doing these days, if you notice, they're not talking anymore more about what paul ryan and governor romney are really for. they're spending an awful lot of time telling you what we, barack obama and joe biden are against and what we've done. and they just attack everything. >> the republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan also has a very busy day. congressman ryan is going to have a rally in ohio in just a couple of hours. more on that in just a moment. this morning, though, he was in derry, new hampshire. >> all these promises were made in the idea of hope and change. and peo
now, we're counting down to tonight's presidential debate. mitt romney's motorcade just pulled up at the debate hall. president obama's expected to arrive in denver any minute as well. we'll be talking with top supporters of each candidate. the former new york city mayor rudy giuliani, he'll join us live this hour. also we'll be hearing from both candidates' wives in special cnn interviews. today, by the way, is the obama's 20th wedding anniversary. so what's it like spending the night with the romneys? i'm wolf blitzer, you're in "the situation room." >>> 34 days from the presidential election but much more importantly right now at least right now we've reached what may be the most decisive night of the 2012 campaign, the first presidential debate at the university of denver. after weeks of downplaying expectations, mitt romney's campaign insiders are finally opening up about what they really think can be accomplished tonight. cnn's national political correspondent jim acosta is in denver getting ready to set the scene. jim. >> reporter: wolf, the romney campaign sees the polls m
. romney must instead set the record straight in a presidential tone firm, respectful, but not deferential. joining me to talk about it from washington, richard goodstein, a democratic strategist who helped get al gore ready for the debates in 2000. on the phone from nebraska, brett o'donnell who is debate coach for mitt romney for part of the republican primary season. good afternoon to both of you gentlemen. >> good to be with you. >> let me start with you. tell me about the balance that romney has to strike, calling out, calling out president obama without appearing to be unfair or perhaps even nasty. >> well, i think it's all a matter of tone and language. and for governor romney, i would describe it as being respectfully but passionately aggressive. so in the way he refers to the president, referring to him as mr. president, with all due respect, but he also can't let that put him into a defensive posture where he doesn't -- i agree with karl rove, actually call out the president's policy. so i wouldn't phrase it as calling out the president, but calling out the president's policies.
. the problem for mr. romney, well, presidential elections are decided by electoral votes. and in that puzzle, mitt's chances are starting to crumble like a poorly constructed game of genga. it's still a close race in virginia and florida, with the president up by two in the old dominion. it's ohio with the president opening up a lead of eight points in the buckeye state, where voting is under way. with ohio joining pennsylvania, are iowa and new hampshire turning increasingly blue, that puts the president at 265 electoral votes. mitt romney would have to run the table of every other swing state to get to victory. and clearly, romney's so-called supporters are now reaching for desperate measures. >> on the eve of the first presidential debate, a bombshell is about to be dropped on the white house because tonight you'll hear from barack obama like you've never heard from him before. >> oh, yes, that was the introduction last night before fox aired tape of a 2007 speech by then-candidate obama to a group of black ministers in which he criticized the response to hurricane katrina and provided ce
presidential. i believe it's all about mitt romney. we know the president's skills at debating and talking. he's better off with a teleprompter but he's still a glib guy with a lot of substance. but what we don't know is how good mitt is. he was good against primary opponents. but this is the president of the united states and he has to make his case effectively without being too strident and basically presidential. bill: you said voters have to say maybe. >> today the election would be won by obama in a close election. but we have to shift voters to say i'll give this guy another look. i'm not going to cast my vote tomorrow. i'll look at other two debates and move forward. if he doesn't do well tonight. many of these absentee ballots will be cast and it may be too late to turn around. bill: the viewership actually went higher as the debates went along in debate number two and three. what is a win for president obama on that stage? >> that he comes off with people saying the same thing about him. i have got to give the guy a break, he inherited tough times. he has not been a bad president. he'

important moment of this presidential debate. in just a few hours as you said, mitt romney, barack obama squaring off here in denver. it will be a 90-minute debate. it will cover six different segments. most of it, though, john, is going to be on the economy. there's going to be three segments to focus on the economy. one segment on foreign policy. one segment on the role of governing and one segment on the role of government in people's lives, john. so how this is going to be set up is that the candidates will be sitting at podiums. if you're looking at your tv screen, mitt romney on your left, president obama on your right. the first question tonight, john, goes to barack obama. >> well, will they have a chance to mix it up and rebutt each other in a free-flowing way. >> organizers hope to have a flee-flowing discussion. this is the kind discussion we like to see because it allows the two candidates to discuss it amongst themselves. if there are questions about each other's plans, they can directly ask each other that. we have not seen that in this campaign and we'll see it tonight. >>
